Fanny Tang – Artist Biography
Fanny Tang was born on a beautiful small island, Nauru, a Central Pacific Island near Australia and formerly known as Pleasant Island. She holds a BFA in oil painting (University of Calgary). Back and worked in Hong Kong after her undergraduate. In 2013 she finished her MFA in the Fresco Department (Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China). She currently lives and works in Vancouver BC., Canada. Fanny has held solo and group exhibitions in Beijing, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the United States, and Canada.

Fanny Tang 出生在一个美丽的小岛瑙鲁，这是一个靠近澳大利亚的太平洋中部岛屿，原名普莱森特岛。 她拥有加拿大卡尔加里大学油画学士学位。 本科毕业后回香港工作。 2013年，她在中国北京中央美术学院壁画系获得硕士学位。 她目前在加拿大卑诗省温哥华生活和工作。 她曾在北京、台湾、香港、美国、加拿大等地举办个展和群展。
Fanny Tang – Artist Statement
We exist in the unifying flows of impermanence between lives, deaths, beginnings, ends, presence, emptiness, distance, connection, hope, and hopelessness. My artworks flow from my changing awareness of the Buddhist teaching “In the present moment lies freedom” which informs my motto “Swim to my dream and freedom from my mind”.
A unifying beauty is represented in her pieces by incorporating the technique of pouring acrylic sheets to form swimming sea creatures and integrating: mountains, clouds, birds into seascapes, aquatic life into skyscapes. These elements create a mythical world where qualities of realism, and surrealism are juxtaposed in life’s multi-dimensionality.
A lexicon of personal symbols with cultural meaning and significance inhabits these works. Water representing oneness and connection; Chinese characters’ shaped corals express the insight of the Sūtra on Heart and Eight Realizations of Great Beings; my personally significant symbol for the experience of freedom and suffering are expressed by jellyfishes and puffer fish accordingly.
Artworks are the performance of a world that allows one to escape from our current reality in exchange for living with hope in a fantasy that offers reprieve, while reminding us that there are always possibilities, connection, potential in the now, however bleak our current circumstances maybe. Early works are a call for all of us to become more aware of the precious and vital ecosystems that embrace us; to value; to acknowledge; to let go; to accept, and finally, to join the harmony between the universes within and outside of us.

我们存在于生命、死亡、开始、结束、存在、空虚、距离、联系、希望和绝望之间的无常的统一流动中。 我的艺术作品源于我对佛教教义“自由在当下”的不断变化的认识，这也体现了我的座右铭“游向我的梦想，摆脱我的思想的自由”。
她的作品体现了一种统一的美感，采用了浇注亚克力板的技术，形成游泳的海洋生物，并将山、云、鸟融入海景，将水生生物融入天空景观。 这些元素创造了一个神话世界，现实主义和超现实主义的品质在生活的多维性中并列。

Round Sky and Square Earth
December 19,2019 – January 30, 2020
Using spherical forms as a starting point of a transformation, artist Fanny Tang explores the phases of life, death, and rebirth as they cycle in a perpetual loop. Her observations of the world led the artist to encounter circles repeatedly. She noticed that several life forms like human cells and planets like the Earth are expressed in circular forms that act as containers that support living life forms. In Round Sky and Square Earth, each individual artwork acts as a microcosm that belongs to a bigger ecosystem when seen as a whole.
Fanny Tang uses lines as a transitional phase of cycles, where her execution ranges from nebulous shapes to staccato punctuations to intertwining lines of webs. The variation of the artist’s linework demonstrates the unique traits of individualistic life forms and the repeated patterns that link the subject to an overall whole. The artist’s use of vibrant, jewel-toned colours and rich ochres emphasize the richness found in life, whereas the transparency of colour implies quietness within the composition. It is within the silent moments that the duality of death and rebirth is implied in the paintings. Since life itself is represented through boldness and vibrancy, death and rebirth are aligned in the cycle to loop continually over and over again.

In my paintings a mythical landscape and seascape can be found. The spirit of the beauty of the earth combines with the unique perspective I created for my viewers. I want you to imagine being on an extraordinary life path—one that juxtaposes the realism and dimensional quality of life yet is surreal. Capturing my unconscious mind’s thoughts existing beneath my conscious reality, I express imaginative dreams and visions, not from conscious rational control, but influenced by the inevitability of Eastern art culture that engulfs me. Freedom represented by the fish or the bird in my paintings. My life motto is “Swim to my dream and free from my mind”.
