Mallory Donen – Artist Biography
Mallory Donen is a multidisciplinary artist residing in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil Waututh First Nations. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from University of the Fraser Valley, and a Master of Fine Arts from University of Manitoba. Donen was a recipient of Research and Creation grants from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2021 and 2022. She has exhibited solo and group shows both nationally and internationally in the USA. Currently she works from her art studio at City Centre Artist Lodge (a former motel), the central hub for Vancouver Mural Festival.
Recent solo exhibitions include: The Art of Slowing Down: Women’s Labour & Craft, at Artlink Contemporary gallery, in Fort Wayne, IN; Womanmade: Crafting Architecture and the Mundane, Morey Family Gallery at Art Reach of Michigan, Mt. Pleasant, MI; Back to the Future: Digital Art Through Embroidery, Doris Crowston Gallery, in Sechelt, BC.
Recent group exhibitions include: Eri Explorations, a group show on Granville Island, at the Silk Weaving Studio, in Vancouver, BC; A Closer Look, three-person exhibition, in West Vancouver, BC at the Kay Meek Arts Centre; March Mini, group collective chaos show at Slice of Life Gallery, in Vancouver, BC.

Mallory Donen – Artist Statement
Mallory Donen’s practice exists at the intersection of digital art and contemporary craft. By using the distinct grid format of cross-stitching she creates connections between threads and pixels. Her main source of inspiration is found through computer glitches; by capturing moments of failure, she transforms them into something positive. She always begins with a collaborative process with computers and converts digital imagery into something handmade. By embracing time-consuming processes such as embroidery, knitting, and quilting passed down through generation of women, she brings awareness to the value of women’s work.
