Nine Metro Vancouver-based artists explore the “new normal” in the post-epidemic era. The progress of artificial intelligence and synthetic biology, human cell regeneration, and virtual reality and augmented reality will soon be integrated into human life. Humans are facing an era of new and old productivity and may experience changes in ethics and the reshaping of moral norms soon. The artists lead us to think deeply, and in the dreamlike “reality”, they can achieve “nostalgia” or foresight through their works of art. The exhibition features painting, drawing, sculpture, assemblage, fibre art, ceramic, and digital prints by Daniil Alikov, Sally Clark, Mallory Donen, Anyuta Gusakova, Sofiya Mukhachova, Maude Ren, Sabine Simons, Grace Tao, and Guo Yan.

Special Viewing During the Richmond Art Walk:Dream Mechanism” will be featured prominently during the Richmond Art Walk (www.richmondartwalk.com) on August 17th and 18th. This event is a vibrant celebration of art and culture within our community, providing a unique opportunity to engage with the artists and their works amidst the lively atmosphere of Richmond’s art district.

Richmond-based artist Daniil Alikov, an experienced designer, artist and the inventor of the Techno Naïve genre, incorporates painted canvases, synthesis materials, 3D printing, artificial and even real plants in his conceptual artworks that blend the border of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art. His newest generation canvases with pristine black fields adorned with drawn patterns, text, symbols and non-narratives speak of scientific systems, futuristic notions, and more importantly, the nativity of humans when facing technology.

At the opening night of “Dream Mechanism” exhibition Daniil will create and perform his new Living Sculpture in front of the audience.

Richmond-based artist Sofiya Mukhachova conveys her intricate perceptions and rich narratives through her witty paintings and sculpture. Her “playful” works delves into mythology, astrology, and science; they also remind us of the Superflat genre that strips away the perspectives of the richness of visuals that fill the canvases. On the contrary, her sculptures are nothing but flat. They break through the boundaries of three-dimensionality. She uses filler materials to expand the canvases and let them become a playground for fun materials such as hard plastic parts, stickers and soft paper balls.

Vancouver-based artist Sabine Simons’ Tide Series acrylic paintings on cradled canvases are her “latest works that explore the calm panorama of the beach, the ocean, and the horizon when the tide is out, in a minimalistic, abstracted style.” The beautiful and comforting colours, almost surreal lines and sea level, triggers our understanding and thinking of the coastal environment. “After intensely focusing on encaustics, mixed media and printmaking, I discovered that my preferred medium remains acrylics, for it allows me to work quickly and intuitively. How the work will unfold is not always immediately apparent to me.” – Sabine Simons 2024

Surrey-based artist Grace Tao is a Concordia University trained professional painter. She has a strong interest in studying machinery and mechanisms in paintings range from ancient to contemporary. “Machinery is one of the subjects I like to paint very much, because it is very similar to my experience of life. It has both the layered beauty of the structure, which is fascinating, and at the same time, it also makes people trapped in some degree of irresistible operation. The process of painting machinery is like an outlet for emotions.” – Grace Tao 2024

Richmond-based artist Maude Ren is a prolific award-winning public art designer and artist. Last year, he has settled down in Richmond to keep practicing art and design. His black and white drawing series The Charm of Rootes depicts the tree roots (driftwood) along the coastline he found in Richmond. He believes that the driftwood showcases the beauty that has endured the ravages of time. Their forms and textures seem to tell stories of time, with each groove recording the marks of years gone by. He draws lines and dots along the grooves that resemble science fiction creatures and invites the audiences to think what truly represents all the appearances of things we see.

Vancouver-based artist Guo Yan continues her oil painting series of The Circle of Life. She focuses more on people’s life and experience as well as social evolution and clash. She explores the nuanced relationship between humans and the environment through interpretative dual themes of light and darkness. In her paintings, humans are no longer in the centre or the only subject. All things have animism, and humans are only a part of coexisting with the environment and participating in energy conversion. The acquisition and endowment, release and acceptance of cosmic energy all are unfolded in her works, which are metabolized and endless.

Vancouver-based artist “Mallory Donen’s practice exists at the intersection of digital art and contemporary craft. By using the distinct grid format of cross-stitching she creates connections between threads and pixels. Her main source of inspiration is found through computer glitches; by capturing moments of failure, she transforms them into something positive. She always begins with a collaborative process with computers and converts digital imagery into something handmade. By embracing time-consuming processes such as embroidery, knitting, and quilting passed down through generations of women, she brings awareness to the value of women’s work.” – Mallory Donen 2024

Vancouver-based artist Anyuta Gusakova is a classically trained sculptor who works predominantly in 3D but also does painting and drawing with dreamlike narratives of imaginary creatures, with myth-inspired figures that are visually warm, inviting, and whimsical. They comfort “the ‘inner child’, which is the pure core of the human psyche where individual desires, emotions, and dreams are nested.”

Vancouver-based artist Sally Clark “captures the dreamlike quality of everyday reality. What lies underneath the surface. People moving through a platform of the Millennial Bridge in London, are floating in space; some in bright sunshine and others, in diffused shadow, below. A human aquarium.” – Sally Clark 2024

The exhibition opens on Thursday August 8th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Lipont Gallery, 4211 No. 3 Road Richmond, BC. Admission is free. Parking is free.

The exhibition will be on view from August 8th-29th, as well as during the August 17th – 18th Richmond Art Walk (www.richmondartwalk.com). The exhibition closes during August 21-23 and weekends, otherwise open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm with extended hours to 8pm on Tuesdays.

—— Sabine Simons 2024

——Grace Tao 2024

——Mallory Donen 2024

——Sally Clark 2024
