Raspberries (Rubus idaeus) are the ultimate image of sensuality. Legend goes that the Greek nymph Ida, gathering the originally white berries, cut her breast on a raspberry thorn. From there on in, the fruit had its signature bright red colour, born from her blood. In folk medicine, raspberry leaf is a potent tonic, particularly for female bodies—it tonifies the uterus and so eases menstrual cramps, labour pains, and prevents miscarriage. Covered in thorns to protect it, the raspberry bush knows when it’s time to release its fruit—it doesn’t grasp onto it but tosses it into the wild to scatter more seeds.
