Description/Statement:
In French, this play on the thirteenth tarot card means “The Little Death”—a reference to the moment after orgasm. Here, pomegranates (Punica granatum) are used for their connection to sexuality and fertility, as well as death. Legend says that the first pomegranate was planted by Aphrodite, the goddess of love and sex. Yet, in Greek myth, Persephone ties herself to Hades and the underworld when she ingests the ripe, red fruit. Across cultures, new brides traditionally smashed a pomegranate as a good omen for childbirth, yet the fruit’s rind is a well-known contraceptive.
