Persimmons (Diospyros kaki) are symbols of toughness and longevity in adverse conditions—they are resistant to insects and blights and grow well in most soils. Producing fruits to the end of their 75-year life-span, these trees produce delicious fruits and prize-winning wood. Traditionally, in the American Ozarks, they have been used as a divination tool. Their seeds are split in half in the autumn, revealing one of three motifs to foretell the severity of the winter to come: a knife (a bitter winter), a fork (a mild winter), or a spoon (a snowy winter).
